Life Sciences Returnship Initiative
We recognize the value returners bring to the workforce.
Utah’s life sciences industry is expected to outpace overall statewide job growth in the coming years (1), requiring a talent pipeline to fuel industry needs. Returners are an asset, poised to contribute to industry advancement.
Our intention is to cultivate a growing awareness of returners and prepare them for career re-entry while working to generate more opportunities for returners in the Utah life sciences.

Who is a Returner?
A returner is an experienced professional, typically mid- to senior-level, who has elected to take an extended absence from employment for personal reasons and is seeking to re-enter the workforce. Reasons can include: illness, parental leave, caregiving to family, retirement, bereavement, or military service.

What is a Returnship?
A returnship is a temporary role with customized support for individuals who have taken an extended absence from their career. Generally 12-20 weeks long, returnships offer a transitionary pathway back into the workforce and often lead to full-time employment opportunities. It offers useful experience for returners to update their skills to current industry standards, rebuild their network, and re-develop confidence in the workspace. Returnships provide employers with project-based support and a low-risk opportunity to employ exceptional talent.

Why Hire a Returner?
Returners are a unique talent pool. They are often well educated and have taken steps to upskill themselves during their absence. Additionally, they are equipped with diverse background and life skills they’ve developed through associations and experiences during their absence. Because of these experiences, returners bring valuable soft skills that contribute to thought diversity enhancing company culture and operations. They are accustomed to the workplace environment, making them a quick ramp up for team contribution. Returners are typically very motivated to work again – to learn, advance their professional development, and work toward meaningful goals.
The majority demographic of returners are women who’ve taken reprieve for childcare. Research indicators show that women advance company operations and performance outcomes. Research also reveals that director-level female employees leave the workforce at a ratio of 2:1 (2), compounding the already strained gender gap in the sciences. Returners are a readily deployable asset that can propel industry forward, mending the women in leadership chasm.
